West Lincoln Council votes to fill vacancy via by-election

For immediate release: July 16, 2024

At the July 15 Council (including all Committees) meeting, West Lincoln Council directed the Township Clerk to proceed with a by-election to fill the vacant Ward 3 Councillor position. The Council vacancy was declared at the June 24 Council meeting in accordance with section 259(c) of the Municipal Act.

The process to fill a vacancy via by-election is regulated by the Municipal Elections Act. A by-election is conducted following the same rules as a regular election, with the exception of some unique time frames and deadlines.

Timeline

The by-law to conduct a by-election must first be adopted at the August 12 Council (including all Committees) meeting, at which point, the following key dates will be established:

  • August 13: Nomination period begins

  • September 20: Nomination Day (nomination period ends at 2 p.m.)

  • September 20: Withdrawal of nominations (by 2 p.m.)

  • September 23: Certification of nominations

  • August 13-October 31: Filing of notice of registration as third-party advertiser

  • TBD: Advance poll

  • TBD: Advance poll

  • November 4: Voting Day

  • November 5: Certification of by-election results

  • TBD: New Councillor sworn in
